Gold rush silent movie

Freshwater Film Club screening, introduced by film historians Tony Dalton and Tim Nicholson

Dir: Charles Chaplin
Cast: Charles Chaplin and Mack Swain Screened with live piano accompaniment by George King

Set during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, the film embodies all the trademarks of Chaplin’s mix of slapstick, satire, social commentary and sentiment – a perfect showcase for his endearing character as the Little Tramp as he struggles to survive amongst tough grizzled prospectors in Alaska’s inhospitable climate.

The film shows how innovative Chaplin could be and contains many inspired comic inventions. He once said that The Gold Rush was the film he most wanted to be remembered by, which is why we chose this film as an example of his genius. Pure magic.

All the screenings start at 7.00pm (doors open at 6.30pm) and membership for the season is £21.00 (or £3.00 per film on the door).
