Part of Heritage Open Days 2013
St Thomas Church was built on the site of the first Church in Ryde and was privately owned by the Player/Brigstocke family. The church closed in 1959 after which if fell into disrepair and in the late 1960s it was threatened with demolition.
In the 1970s the 'Friends of St Thomas' group was formed and during the 1980s restoration works were carried out which saved the building.
Today this beautiful building, which contains some fine memorials to the lords of the Manor and many other notable residents of Ryde, is owned by the Isle of Wight Council, but sadly it is rarely open to the public.
During Heritage Open Days 2013 Ryde Social Heritage Group will have an exhibition relating to the history of the building and the town, there will also be talks, and entertainment. Activity sheets for children.
A fun 'Murder Mystery' quiz starting at the church our detectives will need to take a walk around some of the surrounding streets to find clues which will help them solve the crime.
Plus a chance to 'Meet the Residents' - some of the characters from Ryde's past. Opening Times

Saturday 14th September: 1100 - 1600 & 1830 - 2030
