It is 1942, and captured British WWII soldier Jack Celliers (David Bowie) is held in a Japanese prison camp in occupied Java run by honour-bound Captain Yanoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also composed the film's music). Yanoi is astonished and intrigued by Cellier's defiance in the face of Japanese ideas of honour and shame, while John Lawrence (Tom Conti) tries to find common ground. Based on Laurens van der Post's books relating his experience as a Japanese pow.

Directed by Nagisa Ōshima. With David Bowie, Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Takeshi Kitano, Jack Thompson. Ryuichi Sakamoto's music won a BAFTA Award for Best Film Music. Released in 1983, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence lasts 2 hours and 3 minutes and is Certificate 15.
