Part of Isle of Wight Jazz Weekend

The Brass Volcanoes, based in London, are inspired by the New Orleans brass band tradition, also incorporating influences from other cultures and styles – swing, Latin, ska, reggae, gospel, funk, blues... This is all tied together with top class musicianship and a sense of fun, giving the band its own unique sound. Sousaphone player Graham Hughes formed the Brass Volcanoes in 2007, and from the outset the focus was on spontaneity, energy, interaction and joy. He has collected together a group of leading jazz musicians who can respond to what each other plays in the moment and infuse the songs with the magic of the moment!

The Brass Volcanoes’ repertoire is drawn from classic New Orleans songs, as well as numbers composed by members of the band and songs taken from other genres. With vocals from the band, backing riffs created in the moment and improvised solos, each song is given its own personal twist.

In more recent years the Brass Volcanoes have been playing regularly at Ronnie Scott’s in London, in their intimate upstairs venue. By the end of the night much of the room will generally be up on their feet dancing, and occasionally even dancing a conga around the room! Described as a band that “is totally impossible not to enjoy”, The Brass Volcanoes has been inspiring people of all ages and tastes at clubs, arts centres, celebrations, parties and festivals across the UK.
