With an architectural design background, artist Karl Stedman has always worked on detailed, representational pen and ink drawings, mainly of buildings set in their environment.
These drawings are part of an ongoing project recording the buildings of Union Street and it's surrounding area. Ryde has a rich collection of interesting buildings, some of them in better condition than others. The drawings help to highlight the variety of architectural features that can be seen in Ryde. Karl says:
“Since starting the project I've been interested to hear the stories of people who have strong affection and links with the buildings either having lived, worked or visited them over the years. These buildings are part of our past and future. Next time you walk along Union Street look up beyond the shop fronts and take a moment to appreciate the windows, mouldings and details of these fascinating buildings.”
