Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th September 1 - 5pm.
Two of the remarkable houses in Alexandra Gardens, just above the Winter Gardens, will be opening their doors as part of English Heritage's Open Day event.
On a guided tour of these houses built in the 1880's you will be able to see the intricate gothic style staircases, magnificent ceiling plaster work and unusual high skirtings.
You'll hear how Sir Edward Elgar came to spend his honeymoon in the street, how these magnificent gentlemen's residences missed their market and how countless thousands of holidaymakers have stayed in the street.
You'll also hear about the unusual connection between the street and the owners of the famous Lyons Corner Houses and how the houses came to occupy the historic site of Ventnor Mill, which had been there since as early as 1300AD.
