Walbrook here gives his most sinister film performance in this chilling Victorian melodrama in which he persuades his young wife that she is losing her sanity as a result of a series of incidents that he himself has instigated.

This version of the story is far superior to the glossy MGM remake of 1944 that starred Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman, and Wynyard truly suffers as the terrified wife struggling against her husband’s power to keep her dementia at bay.
