Over the last 20 years the small town of Bekoji in the Ethiopian Highlands has produced many of the world's greatest runners. Between them they have clocked up eight Olympic Gold medals, 32 World Championships and broken 10 world records.
This success is partly due to the dedication of former PE teacher Sentayehu Eshetu, who has discovered and trained many of the world’s leading long distance runners.
This feature documentary follows three young hopefuls under his tutelage: farmer's daughter Alemi; Biruk, who juggles looking after his grandmother's shop with school and training; and Hawii, who lives with her extended family on a small holding. They are striving to emulate their local heroes, making the journey from school track to national competition and from childhood to adulthood.
The story encompasses the high stakes and fierce competition of running, while following the characters’ journeys through their formative years, set against rapid changes in their community.
Director Jerry Rothwell and Producer Dan Demissie will introduce the screening and be on hand for a Q&A with the audience afterwards.
Jerry is a documentary filmmaker whose directing credits include The Late George Shaw, a half hour film for Channel 4’s Art Show Series. He is is in development on the feature documentary How To Change The World, for Met Film. Dan, whose family are from Ethiopia, is currently a student at the prestigious National Film and Television School in London.
