Friday 19 April, 6.30pm, Ventnor Library. £6.50
Andrew Carnegie rose from poverty in Scotland to become a multi-millionaire industrialist. Then he gave away his wealth, opening up literature to the masses by setting up Free Libraries all over the world.
Sharron McColl, a Library Assistant in Andrew Carnegie’s first Public Library in Dunfermline, Scotland, will reveal how Carnegie made his money, how he made the decision to give away most of his fortune and how and where he distributed it.
Carnegie’s favourite phrase was “Let there be light”, which was placed over the entrances of many of his Free Libraries. Sharon McColl will not only shed light on his fascinating story, including his one major failure alongside the many successes, but she will also show historic pictures of the architecture and interiors of many of his libraries.
