A family drama in the classic Japanese style, told quietly and movingly, this is the story of a family whose son died rescuing another boy from drowning.

Each year, the family invite the surviving young man to tea, and he is made aware of his inadequacies when he has to listen to the fond family anecdotes about his saviour.

With great dramatic strength Kore-eda extends and develops the tradition of Japanese film making which portrays the way in which resentments and anger are contained within the conventions of politeness and respect. In fact these are universal concerns and their treatment by the director grants them universal appeal.
