The West Gallery, Quay Arts, Sat 14 Jul – Sat 8 Sep 2012. Drinks Reception Sat 14 Jul Starts 6pm

Quay Arts’ Young Curators and Studio Quay students from High Schools on the Isle of Wight, visited David Hockney’s ‘A Bigger Picture’ exhibition at the Royal Academy in March 2012.

Through examining the panoramic-like qualities in his work and reflecting on the inspirational landscape of the Isle of Wight, this exploratory exhibition investigates our relationship with the land in the 21st Century from the standpoint of artist, student and visitor.

Working collaboratively over a two week period, 250 students from Island Schools, artist Tim Johnson, Quay Arts’ Young Curators and Studio Quay students and a series of guest artists, use diverse approaches to transform the gallery space into a 360° panoramic landscape!

Visitors are also invited to make their own mark on the panorama throughout the exhibition this summer.

Guest artists are: David Firmstone / Lisa Traxler / Martin Swan / Jo Hummel-Newell / Eccleston George. The creative process leading to the exhibition will involve diverse approaches including direct drawing from the landscape, the creation of new imagined places, the gathering and harvesting of 'wild' materials to be incorporated into relief and sculptural sections, collage walls of photographs, mapping of favourite places and nostalgic associations.

The panoramic landscape will extend throughout the entire gallery space – bringing the outdoors indoors.

Alongside our main summer exhibition '360º - A Panorama', we will play host to a series of events in and outside of the gallery; exploring different ways of responding to the land and surrounding elements.

These include an evening of carefully selected live performances in the gallery, a special screening of Bruno Wollheim's feature-length film 'A Bigger Picture', and a collaborative exhibition in the Learning Curve Gallery led by poet Lydia Fulleylove and artist Colin Riches, examining transformation of the landscape at Kings Manor Farm on the Yar Estuary (this exhibition is separately and independently funded by the Isle of Wight Council, West Wight Landscape Partnership, Arts Council England and The Albany Visual Arts Award.)

See our website for further details.

'360º - A Panorama exhibition' in The West Gallery, Sat 14 Jul – Sat 8 Sep is made possible from funding by the Ernest Cook Trust.

Please note that school workshops will be taking place in the gallery Mon 2 – Fri 13 July prior to its opening.
