Venue: Jenny Kerry Performing Arts Centre at Ryde School (via the Queen's Road entrance).
Directed by the legendary Yasujirō Ozu, who co-wrote the screenplay, Late Spring's story is of a daughter resisting her widowed father's attempts at marrying her off, following the inteference of a meddling aunt. Deceit and sacrifice follow.
With Chishū Ryū, Setsuko Hara, Haruko Sugimura, Yumeji Tsukioka. Made under the American Occupation and released in 1949, Ozu manages brilliantly to avoid the censors' roadblocks and subvert their objections in his usual calm manner.
Late Spring lasts 1 hour and 48 minutes and is Certificate U. It has English subtitles.
Ryde Film Club Silver members pay £5 admission; visitors pay £7. RFC Gold members: no admission charge.
