An active installation created by artist Kathy Williams, who makes site, time and place specific artwork. She is concerned with pulling away what we usually see as paint on a canvas to re-assemble elements in a physical space. Each venue demands different colours, shapes and marks. Kathy applies paint to transparent surfaces so we only see the paint itself in the limitless possibilities of private composition.
Joined Up Thinking will invite the public to re-arrange prepared panels of paint, inviting painted responses from people so they can arrange and compose their own paintings within the space.
Kathy sees a synthesis of her own pieces together with those from the public as the point at which interesting visual conversations can occur.
Kathy started PADA* last year, a concept entitled “painting as a democratic act” and is a method of not only including the public but is central to her bid of creating visual work that communicates with everyone. Kathy is intent to break down barriers of access to painted art by opening up possibilities with the public, creating conversations and education that revolves around the most basic of expressive materials.
During the exhibition, Kathy encourages the public to document the exhibition digitally and share their interpretations on social media everlasting document to what has happened. The painted pieces will be taken down and put away, never to be seen in the same way, the same format again.
