The Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra will take to the Medina Theatre stage on Sunday 5th November for the opening concert of their season.

The concert starts at 7.15pm and will include music for all ages.

The concert will open with a rare performance of Brigg Fair by Delius. The work is largely based on a Lincolnshire folk song about Brigg Fair (which still exists).

After a pastoral opening the main tune is heard followed by a succession of variations leading to a glorious finale.

Concluding the first half will be a performance of the Barber violin concerto given by teenage superstar Aki Blendis.

Now 15 years old, Aki began playing the violin at the age of 6 and is now studying at the Junior Department of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is a member of the National Youth Orchestra and in 2022 reached the strings final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year.

The concerto written in 1939 is famous for its beautiful slow movement and the virtuosity of the last movement.

The concert will conclude with a performance of Mahler’s 1st Symphony “Titan”. The work calls for a large orchestra and is demanding of all sections of the orchestra.

Originally conceived as a five movement work, it is today heard in its four movement version. It will be a wonderful ending to a wonderful evening of music.

Tickets are available from the Medina Theatre.
