SUMMER SCHOOL 2023 Thursday 10th and Friday 11th August, @ Jubilee Stores, Newport 10am – 4pm both days £150 | Materials included | Experience: Suitable for all levels

In this workshop, students interested in the historical technique of painting with egg tempera will learn to prepare and mix their own paints, using naturally sourced pigments. Egg tempera was the medium used in European ‘panel painting’ before oil painting gained prominence in the 16th century. It’s an enduring medium: traces of egg tempera were found on 1st Century AD Egyptian sarcophagi, whilst 20th Century artists include George de Chirico, Otto Dix and the American painter Andrew Wyeth. It continues to be the medium of choice for artists to this day and is of particular relevance for those seeking to work in sustainable organic mediums.

Students will paint on panels which tutor Melanie Swan prepares with traditional gesso, made with rabbitskin glue and whiting.

Panels and pigments are provided.

Melanie Swan paints in the traditional medium of egg tempera on gesso-ed wooden panels. She has a particular interest in contemporary applications of traditional materials and pigments in painting and printmaking and works with natural dyes and inks using materials she gathers and prepares herself.
