'Truncations' is an installation created by the artist Joanna Kori - in response to both the sewing, and wider programme of community support work and activities that take place at Aspire Ryde.

Charcoal drawings of clothing on tissue paper, echo the paper used for sewing patterns and tailor's chalk. The twisted contortions of the drawings in front - created by sewing, layering and folding - are a reflection on the trauma of truncated lives in suspension, endured by many people who receive humanitarian help and support through Aspire Ryde. The large backdrop drawing is a dark jacket looming and framing the suspended frontispieces. The scattered pieces on the floor are cuttings from the frontispieces.

Joanna has a BA in Fine Art from the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University, and an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art, London, UK. She was a finalist in the Jerwood Sussex Arts prize in 2010, and winner of the Quay Arts Biennial Open Exhibition in 2015. Joanna lives in Ventnor and is co-founder of art house life, a contemporary arts project in Ventnor with fellow artist Albedo Marz. arthouselife invites national and international guest artists to their annual art event for Ventnor Fringe, which takes place between the end of July and beginning of August each year.
