Directed by Yasujirô Ozu, Tokyo Story features Chishû Ryû, Chieko Higashiyama, and Sô Yamamura. Ozu is widely regarded as one of the world's most influential directors. In a Sight & Sound poll, Ozu's Tokyo Story was voted the greatest film of all time by world directors.
Tokyo Story is a subtly observed family drama set in post-WWII Japan. A busy working couple leave a widowed daughter to deal with their visiting aged parents. Ozu provides emotional continuity without providing predictable (and therefore unnecessary) detail in-fill. In the absence of melodrama the dialogue is deceptively casual, but even the most off the cuff remark has weight. However, no one is condemned here: instead, a sense of inevitability carries over into resigned sadness.
Tokyo Story was first released in 1953. It is category U and runs for 136 minutes.
Ryde Film Club admission prices: £5.00 members, £7.00 guests.
