Freshwater Film Club present BROKEN BLOSSOMS (1919) (90 mins - b/w) Silent screening with live piano accompaniment Dir: D.W. Griffith Cast: Lillian Gish, Richard Barthelmess & Donald Crisp
Lucy (Gish) is a young girl used to being abused by her alcoholic father, Battling Burrows (Crisp). Her life changes when she meets a kind-hearted Chinese man, Cheng Huan (Barthelmess).
The two form a bond as two unwanted outcasts of society, but their friendship is tormented by Burrows who drags the hapless Lucy home to punish her. Cheng has meanwhile fallen in love with her and tried to rescue her.
Gish is heartbreakingly good in her role as the emotionally tortured waif, proving that she was one of the finest screen actresses in the cinema history. And unlike his previous epic The Birth of a Nation, this movie is comparatively small-scale in appearance, filmed almost entirely on sets.
