This talk aims to introduce the audience to the design of commercial wind turbine blades up to 80m in length. The design and manufacture of large wind turbines is a relatively new field of engineering, and as such, presents engineers with a multitude of opportunities and challenges.

The talk will be based around the design life-cycle of a new blade from the first design calculations, to detailing modelling, and finally to testing.

Throughout, key concepts will be highlighted such as the main components of a blade, the design standards used, the tools and calculations used for analysis, an overview of manufacturing, and the full-scale testing programme that blades must pass to become certified.

It is hoped that the audience will leave with an increased knowledge and appreciation of this exciting field of engineering.

Speaker: Nicholas Gaudern, MA, MEng (Cantab), CEng MIMechE
