Artist Jan Frith’s 2024 Sewing Memories project began at Ryde Library 2-22 February, before moving to Quay Arts 26 Feb-24 March, and completing the mini tour here at Independent Arts. The project features her ongoing interactive artwork comprising an old Singer sewing machine embedded with digital technology and containing over 200 sewing memories. Stories about sewing and memories of people who have sewn can be read by turning the handle of Jan’s Singer sewing machine. Originally inspired by 1940’s stories of ‘Make Do and Mend’, it now reflects a diverse range of people who have sewn.
Throughout February and March Jan has led a series of creative sewing sessions supported by Ryde Library, Network Ryde, Quay Arts and Independent Arts, including 'Sew, Style & Upcycle' workshops for youth services and education, as well as sessions for community sewing and craft groups to produce stitched textile artworks.
Jan’s exhibition at Independent Arts now celebrates sewing pieces made by Isle of Wight participants, along with memory contributions received from seeing the exhibitions and participating in the community workshops. Alongside textile works are photographs of participants’ sewing hands by guest artist photographer Vincent Dupont-Blackshaw.
