"Euclid & LSST - paving the way for the next decade in astrophysics" by Prof. Adam Amara (Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, Portsmouth University)
This decade will see two major astronomical facilities come online. The first is LSST, recently renamed Vera Rubin, which is a next-generation observatory being built in Chile by a US-led international collaboration. The second mission is Euclid, a European-led space telescope. Together these two complementary experiments, which have taken more than a decade to prepare, are set to revolutionise our understanding of the Universe. In this talk, I will give a history of these experiments and what we hope to learn from them.
The Vectis Astronomical Society meets on the 4th Friday of every month, except for December. This event is open for non-members to attend. The speakers come from all over the country and give a presentation for around 45 mins. We then stop for a break with tea and biscuits, which gives an opportunity to mingle and chat. The second half of the evening one of our regular members will give a short 20 minute ‘what’s in the sky this month’ presentation.
We have a suggested donation of £2.50 for Non Members of VAS.
