TIMBUKTU (Fra/Maur) Dir: Abderrahmane Sissako Cert 12A (UK) 29th/30th Sept 2015 7.30pm Runs: 97 mins Cast: Ibrahim Ahmed, Abel Jafri, Toulou Kiki. In French/Arabic (sutbtitled).
Kidane, a cattle herder, lives peacefully with his family in the dunes near Timbuktu. He is happy to be away from the Jihadist regime in the nearby town, where music, laughter, football and laughter are banned and women lead a shadowy existence. But his destiny changes when an accident leads him to face the new laws of the foreign Islamists. This is a subtle look at the Jihadist movement and the ancient cultures it envelops, beautifully filmed in the desert landscape.
Timbuktu poetically tells the story of the silent struggle of the people and the uncertain future of the children, with a creeping sense of tragedy.
