Ventnor Film Society present ... The Selfish Giant
On a run-down Yorkshire housing estate, two 13 year-old boys, excluded from school and looking for easy money, are drawn into the shady world of scrap metal dealing.
In an effort to support their families, hyperactive and aggressive Arbor and the sensitive horse-loving Swifty trawl the town in a horse and cart, pinching metal to sell to the dodgy local dealer, Kitten.
When Kitten lines up Swifty as a jockey in his illegal drag races, a rift opens in their friendship and tensions build, with tragic consequences.
Despite the stark urban realism of the setting, this is a tender and touching story about friendship and redemption, inspired by Oscar Wilde's fairy tale of the same name. In the lead roles are two local lads with no previous acting experience. The story is one of deprived lives set amongst dismal post-industrial landscapes.
Shot in documentary style with natural light and hand-held camera, the blighted urban wasteland contrasts with misty rural fields of grazing sheep and horses, to produce some surprisingly poetic moments.
