The West Gallery, Quay Arts, Sat 2 Jun – Sat 23 Jun

25 artists responding to the theme ‘Standpoint’.

Standpoint (definition: a physical or mental position from which things are viewed, considered or judged; a point of view).

2012 marks the 30th anniversary of Quay Arts' existence as the Isle of Wight’s leading arts venue and the 10th year of our highly-acclaimed creative Summer School; it is also the year in which we lose our core funding from Arts Council England. At this challenging point in our history, we want to be both reflective and forward-thinking, to continue to strive towards making connections and bridging the gap between artist, audience and gallery.

This year, we invited artists, designers and makers from the Island and beyond to exhibit in our biennial Open exhibition responding to the theme, ‘Standpoint’, where we aim to reflect on and interpret the world around us, from our own unique standpoint.

Coinciding with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, this year’s Open exhibition ‘Standpoint: Diamonds In The Rough’ gave artists the option to submit work-in-progress as well as finished pieces – offering a platform to those early in their artistic career, nurturing experimentation and innovation within the gallery and giving a rare insight into the artistic process for visitors.

Expect fresh, dynamic, innovative pieces; from painting, textiles and sculpture, to photography, film and installation, many responding to the theme through everyday observations, but often focusing on place, identity and memory, making a statement from their standpoint.

Don’t forget…
