This course is an in-depth practical study of working with the immensely versatile and expressive medium of charcoal.

The main emphasis will be on exploring mark-making techniques, working directly from observation and on a large scale.

Contemporary artists who have used charcoal as an important part of their practice will be considered, as will its historical use. the course will develop both skills and understanding of the potential of this simple and inexpensive medium.
