An Evening Lecture by Professor Katharine Cockin (University of Hull)
Julia Margaret Cameron's portrait of Ellen Terry depicts the young actor at the time of her marriage to the artist G. F. Watts. The failure of the marriage was one link in a chain of events that led to Ellen Terry's long career on the stage, international fame as a performer in and lecturer on Shakespeare's plays. She was also a prolific writer. According to Virginia Woolf the correspondence between Ellen Terry and George Bernard Shaw contained ‘some of the best letters in the language’. Woolf's opinion of the quality of Terry’s writing would have been drawn from her knowledge of Terry’s autobiography, The Story of My Life (1908) and Christopher St John’s edition, Ellen Terry and Bernard Shaw: A Correspondence (1931). In this talk, Professor Katharine Cockin of University of Hull, will present some highlights from her new research arising from The Collected Letters of Ellen Terry (2010-17; 8 vols).
