Artist Talk by Day Bowman on 'The Urban Wastelands Project', The West Gallery, Quay Arts. Sat 21 Jan Starts 2.30pm FREE.
Join us for this free gallery talk by painter Day Bowman as she discuss her latest collaborative exhibition; 'The Urban Wastelands Project' in The West Gallery.
The exhibition combines the work of British painter, Day Bowman, alongside award-winning film maker, Ian Knox, and music by internationally acclaimed music group Transglobal Underground, as a finale event on Fri 3rd Feb.
Bowman presents contemporary collage paintings on the urban marine landscape, referencing the shapes and forms of post-industrial architecture such as cooling towers, water towers and wasteland detritus. Ian Knox’s short films, Zone (soundtracked by Transglobal Underground’s Unite album) reflect the gritty landscapes alluded to in Bowman’s large, gestural paintings - the journey becomes a metaphor for mass transmigration.
'The Urban Wastelands Project' started its UK tour at the Black Swan Arts as part of the Frome Arts Festival in July 2011, then toured to Dorchester Arts Centre, Kelly Ross Fine Art at The Art Stable, Dorset and finally to Quay Arts, IOW.
Bowman studied at Chelsea School of Art and London University 1977 – 1980. Recent solo exhibitions include Phoenix Arts Centre, Exeter, The National Maritime Museum, Falmouth and The Study Gallery, Poole. Since 2006, Bowman has been represented by Art First London and Karin Sanders New York. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Whitechapel Gallery London, Contemporary Arts Society, Royal Academy Summer Show, The London Group and CUBE Manchester. She has also exhibited in Quay Arts’ Open exhibitions 2008 & 2010 and Bargate Monument Gallery Open: ‘Cut to the Chase’ 2009, Southampton. Last summer she was overall prize winner in the Dorchester Arts Open.
A fully illustrated catalogue with a forward by Mel Gooding and short essay by Jenny Blyth is available to purchase throughout this exhibition, as well as a selection of CDs and DVDs by Transglobal Underground and Ian Knox.
The Urban Wastelands Project is on now until Sat 4 Feb 2012.
