Freshwater Film Club present ... Special illustrated talk on “Hollywood Musicals: The Early Years” Followed by Show Boat (US / bw / 1936) (113 mins – b/w) Dir: James Whale Cast: Irene Dunne, Allan Jones, Helen Morgan & Paul Robeson

Whilst most people remember the glossy 1940 MGM colour production, we think the original 1936 film is not only the more complete film adaptation of a classic stage musical, particularly in the underlying racial storyline, but also the better version in terms of singing.

SHOW BOAT boasts some of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein’s best loved songs, but we defy anyone not to be moved by Paul Robeson’s beautiful rendition of “Ole Man River’ and Helen Morgan haunting singing of ‘My Man Bill’.

Season membership for the Freshwater Film Club is £21.00 per person, which covers all eight films. The entrance fee for an individual screening is £3.00 on the door.

We recommend that season membership of the club is obtained in advance of the first screening, by contacting Debra at Freshwater Memorial Hall. Tel; 01983 752956 [email protected]
