Art history and theory can be daunting subjects, but knowing a little more about them can give new insight into works in exhibitions and also your own practice if you are an artist.

Each session will cover a different period or idea in art history with a short introductory lecture leading to a discussion. Participants will be expected to research and deliver a five-minute talk about an artwork for each workshop. Strictly limited to 6 places per session. Over 18s only.

Sessions:

Monday 22nd Feb 6-8pm: Art Before Art. There’s a lot more history than there is Art History, so we’ll start out talking about art from caves to churches and start to explore some ideas about what do we mean when we say “art”.

Monday 7th March 6-8pm: Renaissance and the Mythology of the Past. The Renaissance is often seen as the first grand movement in art history to produce art intended to be seen as art. We’ll consider why and how this happened and discuss whether history is ever authentic.

Monday 21st March 6-8pm: Vanitas and the Opulence of Death. Protestantism in northern Europe rejected mainstream Christian art as idolatry and embraced a sober, austere aesthetic. We’ll discuss the irony of expensive status symbols which say possessions are worthless.

About the Tutor:

Howard Hardiman is an artist in residence at Jubilee Stores, part of Quay Arts in Newport on the Isle of Wight. With a background in sign language interpreting and comic book artwork, his current work focuses on observational drawing and research. His work has been exhibited in Brading Roman Villa, The West Gallery in Quay Arts and Bank of America. As well as having drawing work published in the UK and abroad, Howard Hardiman has also delivered lectures and workshops for many major London art galleries, including the National Gallery, Hayward Gallery and Tate Modern.
