Raising the ordinary to elevated heights.

Paul Woods (aka Paradox Paul) is a conceptual artist, recently returned to the Island from 20 years spent in Europe. He previously worked as an architectural model-maker and exhibition technician before focussing on his visual art practice. Rather than working in a particular field or media, he has worked on a wide range of projects involving installation, sculpture, photography, painting, performance art and audience participation. His work can be defined as conceptual; however humour and subversion remain a constant.

‘Elevation’ brings various elements and ideas together. All works displayed have been assembled within a six month period, starting in his studio at Foal Arts in Ryde, then in The West Gallery at Quay Arts. All works are created from recycled materials collected from streets and building sites around the Island, some of it specifically donated. Reluctant to work from a blank canvas, he utilises reclaimed materials as they contain built-in character and history. The material itself becomes elevated and forms a new lease of life for everyone to appreciate.

Works include two new thrones, one referring directly to architecture, harking back to his roots as an architectural model-maker, while the other will be the largest Paul has created to date. These pieces trace back too to his ‘Game of Thorns’ throne installation in the group show ‘The Art of Democracy‘, also held in The West Gallery in Summer 2015.

Paul’s throne installations allow visitors to feel a sense of power and elevation through being able to physically interact with the works. The exhibition ‘Elevation’ will explore this concept further, on the subject of raising the ordinary (object or person) to lofty heights, whilst examining other elevated structures within the gallery.

Through Paul’s multi-disciplinary methods and visitor interaction, a wider audience is allowed to directly participate in the arts and feel included in the making process. Throughout the residency, visitors will be invited to help construct and develop various works – and to donate materials to the project. (More information on how to get involved will be available very soon.)

Aside from his artistic practice, Paul Woods founded and ran off-site spaces for many years in Berlin and Zürich as a curator, specialising in exhibition and events design. He has also exhibited and participated in projects in Berlin, Hamburg, Zürich, London and Prague.
