Herschel Space Observatory and ALMA explore deep into the space

Dr Mikako Matsuura

Since its launch in 2009, the Herschel Space Observatory has explored deep into the space that is hidden behind dust. Herschel has found how stars are formed inside the cocoon of cold gas and dust. Also Herschel revealed that the Universe used to form stars much more actively in the past than the current stage. Following Herschel success, ALMA started operation in 2012 in the Chilean desert. ALMA has far better angular resolutions than Herschel, unveiling unseen detail structures hidden behind dust. I will highlight of the Herschel discoveries made during its 4-year scientific exploitation, and recent ALMA findings.

Dr Mikako Matsuura obtained a PhD in astronomy at University of Tokyo 2001. Since that, she has worked at University of Manchester, University College London, and moved to Cardiff University as a research fellow and academic staff in 2015.

The Vectis Astronomical Society meets on the 4th Friday of every month, except for December. This event is open for non-members to attend. The speakers come from all over the country and give a presentation for around 45 mins. We then stop for a break with tea and biscuits, which gives an opportunity to mingle and chat.

The second half of the evening sees a presentation by one of our regular members showing us what to we could see in the sky over the coming month. This always involves some great pictures projected onto the large screen. Entry to the event is free of charge, although as we run as a charity, donations are always welcome.

Newsletters are available at the entrance for a suggested donation of £2.00
