Tea 2.30pm, Film starts 3.15pm, Bembridge Village Hall – Film £4 on the door

Ryde Lions are once again kindly providing a delicious afternoon tea with lovingly baked homemade cakes before our screening of The Two Faces of January. The tea starts at 2.30pm and all proceeds go to Ryde Lions’ local charities. At 3.15pm the film will start, and what a treat we have for you! If you loved Anthony Minghella’s ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’, this is right up your street.

Like Ripley, the screenplay is an adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith novel and full of similar sixties sun-drenched shenanigans. The screenwriter Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove, Drive) makes a stylish directing debut with a sleek thriller set in Greece and Istanbul in 1962. Intrigue begins at the Parthenon when glamorous and wealthy American tourists Chester MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen) and his young wife Collete (Kirsten Dunst) meet American expat Rydal (Oscar Isaac), a scammer working as a tour guide. Instead of becoming his latest victims, the two befriend him. But all is not as it seems and - after a shocking incident – the three are forced on the run. Their journey takes them from Greece to Turkey, and to a dramatic finale played out in the back alleys of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar.

‘It’s an elegantly pleasurable period thriller, a film of tidy precision and class.’ ****The Telegraph

‘Amini captures brilliantly that strange, queasy mix of seaminess and elegance that characterises Highsmith’s crime stories’ ****The Independent
