Climate Change – The Long View

Professor Chris Stillman, Professor & Fellow Emeritus, Trinity College Dublin

As a Geologist I am aware that fundamental Climate Change has occurred many times over the past two billion years. I will briefly discuss the causes and results, and compare this with the information we have of current change. Are we undergoing such a change? If so, I will look forward to consider what the future may hold for the planet and its inhabitants. If, as is projected, it becomes essential to drastically cut back on the production of hydrocarbon fuels, I will then consider the options we have to provide alternatives; I will particularly consider the geologically suitable location of nuclear power stations and the disposal of nuclear waste.
