Set in 18th century Denmark, A Royal Affair tells of a love triangle between the increasingly unhinged King Christian VII, his young queen Caroline Matilda and an idealistic royal physician. Beautiful, witty and charming, Caroline is initially enchanted with her new court, but soon discovers the King is infantile and dissolute.

She finds a kindred spirit in the progressive doctor and together they begin a sweeping reform of Denmark. But their forbidden affair provokes the enmity of the powerful courtiers and sets off a conflict that threatens both the lovers and the emerging nation.

A Royal Affair is a gripping tale of brave idealists who risk everything in their pursuit of freedom for their people. Director Niklolaj Arcel pays was more interested in character than historical detail, and brings to life a trio of rounded individuals driven by passions and ideals.

This beautifully staged period drama combines political intrigue and romantic passion, played out in gorgeous landscapes and an accurate historical setting.
