Quay Arts’ youth group Young Quay have invited UK based artists to submit work responding to the theme ‘self’; an exhibition entirely created by Young Quay.

self: (definition of one's identity, character, abilities, and attitudes, especially in relation to persons or things outside oneself or itself.)

Young Quay are team of 9 students (ages 14 – 17) from the Isle of Wight who have been working under the guidance of Quay Arts' Visual Arts Project Manager, Georgia Newman to curate an exhibition in The West Gallery. The group have been working together since September 2013 on curatorial process and exploring practical, studio-based art sessions with selected guest artists. They meet every Monday after school and also on some Saturdays for offsite gallery visits.

For this Open Exhibition, they have been working on every aspect of curating the show – from designing the brief and selecting the work, to installing in the gallery and marketing the exhibition, right up to its grand opening.

With ‘selfie’ becoming word of the year in 2013 and making its way into the Oxford dictionaries, Young Quay aimed to reflect on this by producing an Open Exhibition titled ‘self’. At the beginning of 2014, Young Quay invited artists from ages 13+ (no end age limit) from anywhere in the UK to respond to the theme ‘self’. Artists have submitted works which explore ‘self’ in its traditional sense, through portraiture and some through more ambiguous and contemporary methods. 28 artists have now been selected to exhibit their work in The West Gallery, ages range from 17 to over 70 with the majority of submissions coming from the Isle of Wight as well as submissions from Fareham, London and Lincoln. Works range from paintings to photography, film works to 3D installations as well as interactive pieces.
