Ventnor Film Society present ... The Hunt
This tense and frighteningly realistic Danish thriller sees Lucas, a former teacher, struggling to move on from a bitter divorce.
He is surrounded by good friends in a close community and the film opens with him enjoying the annual deer hunting trip. He finds a new job as an assistant at a nursery school, where a little girl, his best friend's daughter, makes a shocking false allegation against him.
Persecuted by his former friends as mass hysteria takes over the town, Lucas is left alone to fight for his freedom and his reputation. We watch him change from hunter to quarry in a witch hunt where he is guilty until proven innocent.
Director Thomas Vinterberg took his story from a real case shown him by a psychologist and wanted to explore the emotional rather than the legal side of stories such as this. The film depicts the modern world where adults and children can no longer be naturally physical for fear of misunderstanding.
There are no heroes or villains here; in a recent interview Vinterberg said they are "all innocent, sweet, and pure people who have this splinter in the eye that takes away their innocence". Filmed in almost documentary style and flawlessly acted, this is a dramatic psycho-thriller with edge-of-seat tension that builds to an explosive climax.
