Fluid and Soundings’ people share a belief that understanding a place is as much about the social, cultural and economic life as it is about the physical. Together they work at the threshold between community engagement, art practice and planning, defining a new attitude towards placemaking which involves people, place and history.

Both practices foster close working relationships with clients and communities through early and continued involvement in the brief-making and design process. This hands-on and accessible approach has lead to the development of tailored solutions that create successful places and well-judged buildings.

Fluid offers architectural, urban design, and masterplanning services, from visioning exercises through to the implementation of detail design. Ranging from the large to the small, Fluid creates environments that are not only fit for their purpose but which reflect local identity and can adapt to future change. Fluid has established a reputation for their exemplary work involving participation and community engagement from work on the Kings Cross Central masterplan to the co-creation of two purpose-built youth shelters in Spa Fields, for EC1 NDC, Islington.

Soundings was formed as a sister company to Fluid in 2007. The office was set up to undertake consultation and engagement projects in the built environment with no conflict of interest for architects, developers, land owners, authorities and agencies. Since then Soundings has worked on some very high profile projects, including High Street 2012, The Wharves Deptford, and Chelsea Barracks.
