‘pathway over the sea’ is a new installation by Island based artist Tim Johnson conceived and created especially for Ryde Arts Festival and The Depozitory.
Curiously and unconsciously referencing Robert Smithson’s iconic ‘Spiral Jetty’ of 1970, ‘pathway over the sea’ brings Land Art indoors. This ramshackle jetty playfully inhabits its elegant indoor setting, teasing the ballroom chandeliers and shining floor with its rugged stick construction.
Piers and jetties imply departures and arrivals; ‘pathway over the sea’ presents the possibility of travel though the pathway appears neither straightforward nor sturdy.
At the pier-head the woven shelter offers respite from the journey and the opportunity for isolation and sanctuary.
Tim Johnson is an artist based on the Isle of Wight, whose work encompasses painting, sculpture, performance, basket-making and photography.
He has exhibited throughout the British Isles and has taken part in residencies around the world including projects in Alabama, Ireland, Newfoundland, Denmark, Australia and Uzbekistan.
