The last emperor

Venue: Jenny Kerry Performing Arts Centre at Ryde School (via the Queen's Road entrance).

Puyi was Emperor of China from the age of two until the republican 1911 Revolution forced his abdication (aged six). In 1934 (aged 28) he became Japan's puppet emperor of Manchukuo (Manchuria) after its forces invaded China. Captured by the Soviet Red Army in 1945, he was imprisoned as a war criminal until 1959. The Last Emperor is adapted from Puyi's PRC-published autobiography.

Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci (screenplay co-writer), and released in 1987. With John Lone, Joan Chen, Peter O'Toole, Ryuichi Sakamoto (who also composed music for the film). The Last Emperor lasts 2 hours 43 minutes and is Certificate 15; it is in English, Mandarin, and Japanese (some English subtitles). The film won nine Oscars at the 60th Academy Awards.

Ryde Film Club Silver members pay £5 admission; visitors pay £7. RFC Gold members: no admission charge.
