Cartejas 1

Kiya Heartwood is an award winning singer-songwriter based in Austin, Texas who is currently touring the globe in support of her critically acclaimed 2016 release Palo Duro.

The new album brings about the incarnation of her trio Tejas featuring Anna Harris (fiddle and background vocals) and Jana Pochop (electric guitar). Heartwood’s career has taken her from major label band Stealin Horses to the thoughtful folk of Wishing Chair, and she spent 2015 touring her one woman show, Song Tales from the American Edge in Ireland and the UK. Dirty Linen writes that Kiya's music "serves up a lively batch of original songs that follow on to two of the oldest traditions of folk music: storytelling and political broadside."

Tejas as a trio brings a multitude of sounds and textures to the table. Anna Harris studied violin at the University of Texas at Austin, and performed with multiple symphonies in Texas. She has performed solo and with bands across the country bringing a vast array of styles to her playing, from folk to electronica. Jana Pochop is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from New Mexico and has toured the country with award-winning singer-songwriter Susan Gibson for the past several years. Her style grounded in the rhythm of players like Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin, and influenced by the electric styles of Duke Levine, Mark Knopfler, and John Jennings.

Coupled with Heartwood’s driving acoustic rhythm and thoughtful vocal style, Tejas brings Heartwood’s songs front and center, where they “tell untold stories, tug at your heartstrings, and give you glimpses of the delights of the world."
