Photographing the Aurora - Dr Elizabeth Cunningham

With modern photography equipment, amazing images of the night sky can be taken, even by a beginner on a budget. Dr Elizabeth Cunningham will talk through her first attempts: from the Aurora Borealis in Norway, to trying to capture a comet on a hilltop in Guildford.

Elizabeth has studied the exotic nuclear matter created in stars at Canada’s National Nuclear Physics Laboratory and completed her doctorate in theoretical Nuclear Astrophysics at the University of Surrey. She has also carried out research into the atmosphere of Saturn’s largest moon Titan at Imperial College London. She worked for seven years as a Planetarium Astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich and now works as an Outreach Officer for STFC developing outreach resources and delivering science events, workshops and shows to communicate cutting edge science to all ages.

The Vectis Astronomical Society meets on the 4th Friday of every month, except for December. This event is open for non-members to attend. The speakers come from all over the country and give a presentation for around 45 mins. We then stop for a break with tea and biscuits, which gives an opportunity to mingle and chat.

The second half of the evening sees a presentation by one of our regular members showing us what to we could see in the sky over the coming month. This always involves some great pictures projected onto the large screen. Entry to the event is free of charge, although as we run as a charity, donations are always welcome.
