The Isle of Wight Long Distance Walking Association twenty-four hour walk takes place on the same day – and direction – as the world famous Round the Island Yacht Race.
This provides a totally unique backdrop to the walk, and offers added entertainment for participants and supporters of both events.
It is also just one week after the summer solstice, so we will have maximum daylight hours.
We meet up at West Cowes Chain Ferry and set off sharply at 0400.
We will be walking in an anti-clockwise direction (with the sea – and yacht race – on our right hand side) and the aim is to return to East Cowes Chain Ferry by at least 0400 the following morning.
The coastal footpath is largely considered to be anything between 68 and 77 miles long – subject to which routes are taken when various options are encountered – not to mention any coastal erosion or fallen tree diversions.
In order to walk 73 Miles in 24 hours we will need to walk at an average speed of just over 3 mph, or a mile about every 20 minutes.
However, we will also have to allow for brief rendezvous stops – of only 5 to 10 minutes.
Our walking pace will therefore be critical to achieving our goal.
This walk will undoubtedly present some tough physical and mental challenges, so please ensure that you are physically fit enough to tackle it.
If you have any medical concerns, please consult your GP. If you have any doubts about your ability to complete the walk, the decision to start is entirely yours.
