Long distance walk

The Isle of Wight Long Distance Walking Association Beaches Bars and Blisters 36 Hour Round the Island Walk takes place over 6th and 7th June.

6 Jun
Saturday - West Cowes to Shepherd’s Chine (36.5 miles)

Walkers will meet up at the the Chain Ferry in West Cowes and set off at 0730.

The aim is to reach Shepherd’s Chine by 1930.

There is loads of accommodation nearby in Chale, Shorwell or Brighstone, and you could share lifts:

Westcourt Farm, Shorwell B@B 01983-740233
Island Fish Farm B&B 01983-740941

Wight Mouse Inn, Chale, (view website)

7 June
Sunday Shepherd’s Chine to East Cowes (36.5 miles)

The walk will resume from Shepherd’s Chine at 0730.

East Cowes should be reached before 1930.

The coastal footpath is largely considered to be anything between 68 and 77 miles long – subject to which routes are taken when various options are encountered – not to mention any coastal erosion or fallen tree diversions.

For schedule-planning purposes, we now work on an average of 73 miles. We will also be climbing a total ascent of about 900m, including the highest point of the walk on Tennyson Down at 172m.

The coastal path will largely be covered, although some slightly alternative routes will be offered subject to the weather and individual walking capabilities.

Unfortunately the walk may not be suitable for people with a walking disability, and the complete walk is not really suitable for most dogs.

The walk will particularly appeal to anyone wanting a fairly reasonable physical challenge and some like-minded company.

A good guide to the walk is of course David Yates' book, Beaches Bars and Blisters of the Isle of Wight. Available from all major book retailers – or during the walk!

We will not be directly attempting to raise any money for charity, but please feel free to do so if you wish.

We look forward to your company, and hope that the weather is kind to us, the beaches clean, the bars open when we need them and the blisters few.
