Gavin Griffiths was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 8 on the turn of the Millennium in 2000, where he was informed that his dreams in sports would be affected. Now Gavin is recognised across global diabetes communities for being ‘The DiAthlete’ – an ultra-endurance athlete taking on the extreme to show any dream is still possible whilst living with diabetes.

Gavin’s ultra-endurance feats began in August 2008, at the age of 17, where he completed a 29 mile challenge of running the entire Thanet, Kent coastline in just 3 hours and 1 minute – seemingly against the odds. With many running triumphs to follow, Gavin became a London 2012 Olympic Torchbearer for the London 2012 Olympic Games, carrying the Olympic Flame to represent people living with type 1 diabetes worldwide.

In 2013 he recorded his biggest challenge success to date, completing the 30/30 challenge running from John O’Groats to Land’s End – facing 30 mile routes every day for 30 days. Gavin is now Diabetes UK’s representative in the International Diabetes Federation’s Young Leaders in Diabetes Program, where 70 different nations have representatives for young adults with diabetes. The DiAthlete has successfully organised inspiring DiAthlete tours in Australia and the USA. Completing an Ultra Marathon in Adelaide and 7 marathons in 7 days around Long Island, New York.
