This tense thriller set in the Cold War sees Barbara, a Berlin doctor, banished to a hospital in rural East Germany as punishment for applying for an exit visa to the west.

Whist plotting her escape with her wealthy lover, she is constantly harassed by a menacing Stasi official. When she begins to fall for the hospital's attractive, if secretive, head physician, she doesn't know whether he is lover, spy, or both and is torn between her loyalty to her patients and a chance for love and freedom for herself.

An intelligent, yet compassionate drama that captures the bleak atmosphere of fear and mistrust behind the Iron Curtain.
