Ida

IDA (Poland) 2013 Dir: Pawel Pawlikowski Cert PG-13(UK)

17th/18th Feb 7.30pm

Runs: 82 mins Cast: Agata Kulesza, Agata Trzebuchowska, Dawid Ogrodnik. In Polish (subtitled).

In 1960s Poland, an 18-year-old orphan is preparing to become a nun, when she meets her aunt Wanda, her only living relative and a tough Communist insider, who tells her that her real name is Ida and that her parents were Jews murdered during the Nazi occupation.

There follows an emotional journey to find the family's country home and learn about the secrets of her past. A bleak, frozen winter landscape is evocatively filmed in black and white, with each scene beautifully composed.

Ida is a blend of road movie, coming-of-age story and an exploration of the ambiguous realities of wartime Poland.

Ventnor Film Society meets at Ventnor Arts Club, 13 High St, fortnightly Tues and Weds. 7.30pm. Entrance £6. Parking in Central Car Park or in Grove Rd, free from 6pm.
