Ventnor Film Society present ... Like Father Like Son

Successful architect and family man Ryota has worked hard to achieve the perfect life, living in his elegant Tokyo apartment with his obedient wife and child. But his ordered existence is shattered when he receives a call to say that his son was swapped at birth. He finds his boy now living with a lower-class, ramshackle but caring family of shopkeepers and the two families meet with a view to returning the boys to their natural parents.

As he faces the life-changing decision of choosing between his natural son and the boy he has raised, Ryota is forced to confront his prejudices and ask himself what sort of father he has really been.

Anyone who saw Kore-eda's I Wish last season will recognize his ability to capture perfectly children's actions and feelings. As before, he adopts the technique of placing the camera at a distance and allowing the young actors to guide the scene with minimal direction.

Himself now the father of a five year-old girl, Kore-eda explores whether it is the biological tie or the time shared together that turns a man into a father. More than just another 'baby-swap' drama, this is a poignant story of reflection and self-discovery. This is a charming and playful film with some very human comic moments.
