Freshwater Film Club screening, introduced by film historians Tony Dalton and Tim Nicholson
Cast: Douglas Fairbanks Sr, Billie Dove, Sam de Grasse & Donald Crisp
Screened with live piano accompaniment by George King
A nobleman (Fairbanks) swears to get revenge for the death of his father at the hands of pirates. Having infiltrated the pirate band after killing the captain in a duel, the nobleman, now known as the Black Pirate, becomes their leader. The only member of the band who bears a grudge is its former lieutenant (de Grasse), who has his eyes on a princess (Dove) whom the Black Pirate has sworn to protect.
This is Fairbanks at his swashbuckling best, performing stunts that no-one would dare do today and proving why he was the biggest movie star of his time. The film also happens to be one the first colour movies ever made.
All the screenings start at 7.00pm (doors open at 6.30pm) and membership for the season is £21.00 (or £3.00 per film on the door).
