The final history lecture for 2022… King Alfred: Man & Myth by Professor Barbara Yorke, Professor Emeritus, University of Winchester
King Alfred (871-99) is probably the best known of all Anglo-Saxon kings, but most of what we think we know is myth begun in his own lifetime and developed in subsequent centuries. And yet… Alfred does seem to have been an exceptional individual so this talk tries to separate fact from fable by comparing archaeological and artifactual evidence from his reign with the surviving sources.
Getting to the heart of it all is Dr Barbara Yorke, Professor Emeritus of Early Medieval History at the University of Winchester and Honorary Professor of the Institute of Archaeology, University College, London.
Major publications include Kings and Kingdoms in Early Anglo-Saxon England (1990), Wessex in the Early Middle Ages (1995), and The Conversion of Britain 600-800 (2006)
