Fascinating rythmns

An exhibition inspired by the visual images and music of jazz musicians.

Edna's vigorous drawings and Jenny's evocative papier-mâché sculptures capture the colour, energy and movement of the live performance.

‘‘Two of the biggest influences in my life have always been music – jazz in particular – and drawing and painting. My favoured medium is charcoal but I also work in acrylic and mixed media, and I like to work BIG.

"The freedom of expression and interpretation of these two interests has resulted in this exhibition. I work with music as my companion and sometimes the sounds are smooth and mellow, sometimes loud and raunchy. I hope this comes through in this exhibition.’’ Edna Coatsworth

“In much of my work in the past, I have endeavoured to express a feeling of movement in dance or vigorous action. Although this exhibition is titled "Fascinating Rhythms" I find I have concentrated more on posture and atmosphere, partly due to the accompanying music which immediately transports me to a jazz scene.

"I work in papier-mâché, whatever the size, because of its sculptural quality but I also feel colour is an essential part of each piece. I enjoy many types of music but jazz particularly brings with it strong, vibrant images, noisy and lively but often sad, which I hope becomes evident.’’ Jenny Clayden
